In 2009, 173 people died during the Black Saturday Fires in Victoria. Almost half of these people were more vulnerable because of age, ill health or both.

  • 16% were aged 70 or over
  • 9% were children under 12
  • 24% had chronic health conditions
  • 5% had acute disabilities that probably affected their mobility, judgement or stamina
