Over $42,000 in disaster recovery funds for Byron Shire Council

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and New South Wales Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello today announced a grant of $42,740 in recovery assistance to Byron Shire Council for damage caused by the East Coast Storms and Floods of June 2016.

Minister Keenan said the assistance was being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

"The Commonwealth and the New South Wales governments are committed to working together to assist the Byron community to recover from the impact of the June 2016 natural disaster," Mr Keenan said.

"I commend council, emergency services workers, and local residents and businesses who helped with the clean-up and recovery."

Minister Dominello said the funds would reimburse Byron Shire Council for costs associated with debris clean-up of essential public assets, such as roads, stormwater drains and footpaths.

"The NDRRA program gives councils the confidence to proactively step into recovery mode without delay, knowing that they will be able to access funding for disaster recovery activities," Mr Dominello said.

"Natural disasters are always a challenge for communities. This funding demonstrates the commitment of both our governments to invest in the recovery of disaster affected communities by ensuring damaged assets can be restored."
