Nationally recognised training and short courses

The Department of Justice, Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that manages emergency management training and exercise programs throughout NSW. Training and exercises are coordinated by Regional Emergency Management Officers (REMOs). Training is offered to employees and volunteers from Emergency Services, Functional Areas, government and non-government organisations at the state, regional and local levels. All training courses are fee-free.

OEM training and assessment is delivered using a number of platforms: online course modules, class based courses, post course assessment and recognition only pathways.

There are currently seven Emergency Management training programs available - two online courses and five class based courses. OEM's courses range from short introductory EM courses to courses on managing evacuations or emergencies, and designing and managing exercises. More information on Training Pathways - training program sequence and prerequisites requirements

Online modules are not formally assessed, but there is a quiz component at the end of the course. Class based courses may be formally assessed during delivery as a post-course assessment option, or as a combination of these - in the training room and post-course. Formal assessment is aligned to national vocational units of competency from the Public Safety Training Package. A Recognition pathway is also available for these units of competency. Refer to OEM's Scope of Registration for units of competency that are formally assessed and available.

OEM recognises Statements of Attainment and Qualifications issued by other RTOs.
