After repeated flooding in 2010 and 2012, the Uranquinty Progress Association decided to develop a disaster response plan for the whole community.
A core group from the Association engaged the support of the NSW State Emergency Service and formed the Uranquinty Community Safety Group. The group embarked on recruiting community members with skills and resources who could assist in the development of a disaster resilient community. Using the local expertise and resources they have developed a simple, effective plan which identifies the triggers that they need to be aware of. They have developed a warning system which quickly alerts the community and have identified local people that will help them to protect their properties. They have also developed and rehearsed an evacuation plan complete with their own evacuation centre.
The Uranquinty Community Safety Group have demonstrated that they have taken ownership of their community's safety and are amongst the leaders in making NSW disaster resilient.
