NSW police officers exempt from workers compensation reforms

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Michael Gallacher today announced the NSW Government will maintain the current workers' compensation and death and disability scheme for NSW Police Officers.
"This commitment includes preserving the entitlement to journey claims and continuing to provide the best possible death and disability scheme," Minister Gallacher concluded.
Yesterday the Joint Select Committee on the NSW Workers' Compensation Scheme tabled its report to Parliament.
"The Committee's report revealed that as the end of December 2011, PricewaterhouseCoopers calculated the Workers Compensation Scheme had amassed a deficit of more than $4 billion," Minister Gallacher said.
"Clearly, there can be no doubt that reform of the scheme is now absolutely necessary.
"I am pleased to note that the Committee has provided 28 recommendations setting out a detailed roadmap for reform.
"I am happy to see that the recommendations provided a heavy emphasis on rehabilitation of injured workers.
"Last year the Government had to reform the NSW Police Force death and disability insurance scheme and it was remodeled with the emphasis on getting officers back to work and providing future career opportunities," Minister Gallacher said.
