SES flood response earns top marks
27th October 2009Ministerial media release
Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan has praised the State Emergency Service for their assistance to communities on the Mid-North Coast affected by flooding.
"Widespread heavy rainfall has affected a number of river catchments, with the isolation of more than 80 people on rural properties near Bowraville and Bellingen and numerous local road closures," Mr Whan said.
"Four students who were sitting their HSC exams at Bellingen High School were ferried across the flooded Waterfall Way by SES floodboat this morning, giving the SES top marks for helping them to get to their exam.
"The SES is also keeping a close watch on residents along the Orara, Bellinger and Nambucca Rivers, with water still rising downstream.
"Rural property owners have been asked to relocate livestock, pumps and equipment and stock up on essential supplies such as medicines, food and fuel."
Mr Whan said although rain had eased today, renewed rises were still possible with forecasts for further rain and severe storms predicted for the northern inland of the state this afternoon might cause problems for grain farmers during harvest.
He said SES volunteers had been out helping people affected by floods, providing advice on river heights and roads and monitoring river conditions.
"The SES has responded to 34 requests for help from residents around the State, including leaking roofs, damage caused by fallen trees and branches and sandbagging properties affected by flash flooding."
A number of roads have been closed due to flooding and drivers should check the RTA Traffic Information Line on 131 700 or www.rta.nsw.gov.au for the latest information.
"Our SES volunteers can always been relied upon to respond quickly to calls for help in storms, floods and other emergencies. As always, they have worked tirelessly to assist those affected by these floods," Mr Whan said.
"The community and the Government thank them not only for their hard work but also for their generosity and community spirit in helping those in need."
