Local Information

The Mid North Coast Emergency Management District covers the area from Tea Gardens in the south to Woolgoolga in the north and westwards to the Great Dividing Range.  Lord Howe Island is also included.

There are eight (8) local government areas involved namely:- Bellingen, Coffs Harbour City, Great Lakes , Gloucester, Greater Taree City,  Hastings, Kempsey and Nambucca.   Lord Howe Island is also included managed by the Lord Howe Island Board.

The major centres of population are Forster, Gloucester, Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey and Coffs Harbour.  The population of the District can more than double during peak holiday periods, with tourism a major industry. The immediate coastal areas of the Mid North Coast District are subject of significant residential development.

There are five (5) major river systems in the District which all have a history of being subject to major flooding.

  • Manning River (Greater Taree area).
  • Hastings River (Hastings area)
  • Macleay River (Kempsey area)
  • Bellinger River (Bellingen area)
  • Nambucca River (Nambucca area)

The main transport corridors are the Pacific and Oxley Highways.  The Pacific Highway carries a vast amount of District and Interstate traffic.  Included in this is a large number of heavy transports carrying an unknown quantity and variety of materials which could pose a threat to local communities in the event of an accident.  The main northern rail line also traverses the District.

Main airports with daily commuter flights to Sydney are located at Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie Taree and Lord Howe Island, some access is also available to Brisbane from Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour airports.

There are many Forests and National Parks within the District, including a significant portion of a Marine National Park that covers an area from Wooli in the north (Northern Rivers Emergency Management District) to an area off Coffs Harbour to the South.
